Drivers who cross the Oti River at Dambai in the Krachi East District of the Volta Region say it has become a nightmare crossing the river due to the state of the Ndewura Jakpa Ferry, which is damaging their vehicles on daily basis.
The Ndewura Jakpa Ferry, which belongs to the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC), is not in good shape as drivers struggle on daily basis before they are able to climb onto the ferry to cross the Oti River.
Logs in the deck and rump are in a bad state. Workers on the ferry have to repair the ferry on regular basis before cars are able to climb on to sail across.
A driver with the Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMTL), Thomas Baidoo told The Finder in an interview that the ferry always damages his bus.
"My bumper is always damage anytime I cross with the ferry; this is not helping us. I am not the only one being affected, and you can even ask the other drivers around. I believe government under which ever ministry is responsible to construct some slaps here so that it would help us to climb the ferry easily," Mr Baidoo noted.
However, the Marine Superintendent of the Volta Lake Transport Company (VLTC), Mr Yakubu Issifu Tanko, has assured drivers and passengers that the Ndewura Jakpa Ferry would be replaced by one of the Senchi Ferries.
According to Mr Tanko, the ferry is old but they have been able to maintain it to still be in operation.
"The ferry is old because of this the rump is curved, making it very difficult for driver to ascend onto the ferry. Within every three months we spend GH₵5,000 on logs for the deck and rumps of the ferry. One of the ferries from Senchi would be brought here to replace the Ndewura Jakpa while the other one would be sent to Yeji," Mr Tanko revealed.
