STATESMAN OPINION: This Is How The People See Akufo-Addo

The conferment of the title “ABOTAREHENE” on Nana Akufo-Addo by the Chiefs and people of Wa is a clear confirmation that the masses of Ghana are not prepared to allow the propaganda and lies of the governing National Democratic Congress to influence their views about the Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party.

We therefore find it absurd the continued, spirited effort by members of the NDC to engage in their campaign of painting Nana Akufo-Addo as a violent or arrogant person, and a dictator, whose conduct poses a threat to the peace and stability of the country.

But the masses say they do not see the NPP flagbearer the way members of the NDC want them to see him.

Rather, they see Nana Akufo-Addo as a foremost patriot who was at the forefront of the fight against military dictatorship in Ghana, at the time many people, including President Mahama, failed to stand up to be counted.

Nana Addo showed he was concerned about the fight to ensure Ghanaians enjoyed their fundamental human rights and the peace they needed to unleash their potentials. This is something all discerning, honest Ghanaians cannot fail to attest to. Such a person can never be seen by Ghanaians as a dictator, or somebody who will not promote peace when he becomes the president.

Before the 2012 elections, President Mahama and members of the NDC persistently sought to force it on Ghanaians that Nana Akufo-Addo was not a peaceful person who could guarantee the nation’s stability.

But the NPP flagbearer put them to shame when he faced the greatest test of showing whether he was a peace-loving person or not, after the outcome of the 2012 Presidential Election Petition.

Ghanaians see Nana Akufo-Addo as someone who placed the nation’s peace above his political ambition by accepting the bizarre outcome of the Election Petition. And that was why the Chiefs and people of Wa decided to confer the title “Chief of Patience” on him.

When it comes to issues of good governance, honest and discerning Ghanaians know Nana Akufo-Addo as an incorruptible leader who is not interested in material acquisition. They are convinced he will jealously guard the resources of the country, as a president, unlike President Mahama who sees governance as the best opportunity to create the enabling environment for family members and friends to loot the national coffers.

They know that Nana Akufo-Addo, in his close to 40 years of public life, has carved an enviable niche for himself as a consummate leader who sees politics as a contest of ideas, and always wants to concentrate on the bread and butter issues that concern the people, other than engaging in politics of insults and trivialities that is cherished by politicians like President Mahama with inferior ideas for the development of the country.

This is how the Ghanaian masses have come to know the NPP presidential candidate, as loudly testified to by the Chiefs and people of Wa. They simply know Nana Addo better than President Mahama and members of the NDC, and so will not be influenced by what they say about him.
