Volta Lake Workers Unpaid For 15 Months

Workers of Volta Lake, a company contracted by the government to clean the Albert Bosomtwe Sam Fishing Harbour in Sekondi on Monday, September 5, 2016 besieged the premises of Skyy Power Fm at Fijai to lament the non-payment of their salaries for over 15 months.

The disgruntled workers, numbering over 30, claimed the manageress of the company, one Dinah Mensah usually tell them stories whenever they demand their salary arrears.

One of the aggrieved workers Alfred Gordon disclosed that they were owed 11 months arrears as at March 2016.

They were paid six months and nothing has been given to them up to date.

The workers, who work about five hours daily from 5am to 10am, said they receive a pittance of GH¢100 as monthly salary.

Despite the low salary, we have been doing the work since there is no option, according to them.

They stated that they always travel from communities such as Kojokrom, Mpintsin, Ahenkofi, Nkroful, Sofokrom, Nkotompo, Ekuase, Essaman, Ngyiresia and other neighbouring communities at their own expense.

They said they struggle to cater for themselves and their families because of the situation.

Meanwhile, Ms Dinah Mensah has confirmed the non-payment of the arrears but blamed it on delay by the head office in Accra.
