Review fertilizer subsidy and coupon system - Assembly member

Mr. Victor Ameyaw, Assembly Member for Dotobaa electoral area in Nkoranza South District, has appealed to the government to review the fertilizer subsidy and coupon system to address lapses in the system. He said farmers in the area encountered a lot of difficulties before getting coupons for the fertilizer they required. Mr. Ameyaw said this when he interacted with Dagaaba maize farmers at Dotobaa to find out challenges they faced following the outbreak of army worms in the communities. He said farmers in the area had to travel long distances to meet agricultural extension agents at specific zone centres to receive the coupons and yet sometimes could not receive the required number they demanded. "Whilst some farmers may be looking for ammonium, at times coupons available will be different", Mr. Ameyaw said. He expressed the view that the government could liaise with the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to decide a budget allocation for subsidies on various fertilizer inputs and make them available on the market. Mr. Ameyaw said a number of farmers had complained about the current system and hence the need to revise it.
