The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) in the Ashanti Region has intercepted eight articulated trucks loaded with smuggled goods.
The smuggled items include wax prints, soft drinks, television sets, bags of rice, ceramic tiles, among others.
The Ashanti Regional Commander of the Customs Division, Assistant Commissioner Kwesi Ahiakpor, told Class Business most of the trucks came through the western and eastern corridors.
He said the duties had been worked out on the smuggled goods in addition to penalties.
According to him, custom officials realised that one truck carried rice in excess of 3000 bags, including 68 bags of 50kg Thai perfumed rice, 2073 bags of 25kg Jasmine rice, in addition to 5659.60kg of assorted biscuits and nine cartons of cooking oil.
“The rice alone, without penalty, gives Ghana close to GHS15000; with 100 per cent penalty, it gives Ghana GHS30000. The biscuit alone without penalty is going to give GHS18000 to Ghana,” he disclosed.
Mr Ahiakpor further revealed that since customs intercepted the goods, no owner had shown up to claim the items.
