Brong Ahafo Region Turns 50

As the chiefs and people of the Brong Ahafo region gets ready to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the creation of the region, Regional Minister Kojo Nyamekye Marfo, is calling for more investors to turn their attention to the region. Brong Ahafo is one of the most peaceful regions in the country, playing host to a number of Ghanaians with different cultural values, and this according to the Regional Minister, makes it the most attractive investment destination point in Ghana. Outlining programme of activities for the Brong Ahafo@50 Celebrations at a media briefing in Accra today, Mr Nyamekye Marfo, said the people in region have shown love and respect for all and urged people from the region who are outside to investment in the region. Brong Ahafo has 22 administrative districts with Sunyani being the regional capital. The region has a population of about two million, one hundred and fifty-seven thousand, nine hundred and forty-nine (2,157,949) people, according to the Ghana Health Service report 2007. At the time of the creation of the Region there was only one Senior High School, but today the region boasts 35 Senior High Schools, one Private University, a Polytechnic, 3 Teacher Training Colleges, 747 Primary Schools, 53 Junior High Schools and over 1400 Nursery/Kindergarten Schools. The region also has 579 Health Centres; total road network is 1-thousand-8-hundred and sixty-one trunk roads with over two hundred of them being asphalted. The region is made up of Bonos, Ahafos and some other minority tribe such as the Nafana of Sampa, the Koulongo of Seikwa, and Badu, Mo of Mo among others. The region was created on the 4th of April 1959 after agitation by some prominent chiefs and citizens such as Nana Akumfi Ameyaw of Techiman, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Nana Agyeman Badu of Dormaa and Nana Kwasi Apraaku of Odumasi No.1,over alleged discriminatory practices in the Ashanti Confederacy Council. Reacting to reports that the planning committee intends to remove the statue of Dr. Busia from the Sunyani Jubilee Park and replace with that of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Mr Nyamekye Marfo said, �there is no truth in the allegations�.
