Support Inmates With Tuberculoses And HIV Concerns - Prison Service

Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) J. Adu-Mensah Danfoku, the Prison Service National HIV/AIDS Focal Person, has called on prison officers to ensure that prisoners infected with HIV or tuberculosis while in prison get access to treatment.

He said this would help reduce the spread of such ailments.

CSP Danfoku was speaking at an advocacy meeting of selected prison officers and partners in the Southern Sector of the country under the scaling up of HIV services in the prisons of the country through strengthened service, HIV prevention and effective targeting in the prisons project.

The project is being funded by the Global Fund under the new funding model and it is being implemented by the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG) in all the prisons in the country.

CSP Danfoku urged the prison officers in-charge of the infirmary to send regular reports about tuberculosis and HIV situations in their prisons to their headquarters.

He said this is to inform the Director General of Prisons to plan the necessary interventions.

He said all prisoners would be screened when being admitted into the prisons to enable the prisons  to plan for their feeding and medication.

Mr Gideon Leeson Leckey, Chairman of the Southern Zone of PPAG, urged prison officers in-charge of the infirmaries to share their best practices with their colleagues through laid down channels.

Mrs Nana Amaa Oforiwa Sam, Manager of the Southern Zone of PPAG, urged the prison officers to connect the inmates to treatment centres to where they would be staying after discharge from the prisons to enable them to continue with their treatment.
