The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has launched a Tertiary Driver Licence Project (TDLP) aimed at granting students the opportunity to learn how to drive and obtain driver licence before they complete their programme of study.
The product, ‘TERTDRIVE’ has been developed in response to a growing need of tertiary students to acquire genuine driver license before completion of their academic and professional studies.
All processes leading to the acquisition of a driver licence such as training, testing, personalization and issuance of licences will be done on campus. Students do not need to travel to any of the DVLA’s offices to do that.
Participating institutions will be required to provide classrooms for the theory aspect of the training and a dedicated place for a practical training.
Speaking at the launch, Chief Executive Officer of DVLA, Ing Noble John Appiah, said it is the expectation of his outfit that all tertiary students will take advantage of this unique opportunity to acquire a driver license while in college.
“This is DVLA’s response and contribution to promote safer drivers and road users as part of the National Road Safety Strategy III spearheaded by the National Road Safety Commission” he noted.
The product, he reiterated, offers very unique benefits such as convenience, reduced cost, staggered payment, genuine licence, additional value to academic and professional qualifications, as well as the promotion of positive road user behaviour.
DVLA, he said, will support institutions which will take advantage of the product to establish in house training facilities for training and education of students for acquisition of driver licenses.
A Minister of State at the Presidency, Mr Elvis AfriyieAnkrah, launching the product, advised students to take advantage of the product as driving has now become a pre-requisite for most companies.
He said the transformation of an economy is not solely the duty of government but equally rest on the shoulders of institutions and agencies and as such commended DVLA for the innovation to develop TERTDRIVE.
