NDC, NPP Clash In Damongo Over Transfer

Party supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Damongo clashed on Tuesday afternoon over allegation of foreigners being transported to the registration centre to transfer their votes. One person has been arrested in connection with the clashes.

Information gathered by DAILY GUIDE indicates that some persons were brought to the centre by some members of the NPP with intent to transfer their votes, but the NDC activists prevented them from going through the process.

Some minutes later, some NDC members reportedly brought people from Daboya for a similar mission and the NPP guys also reportedly prevented them from doing so.

The situation caused a heated argument between both political parties, resulting in the Youth Organizer of the NDC purportedly beating up an elderly man and injuring his right eye.

DAILY GUIDE learnt that another NDC activist used a piece of firewood to hit a man from Daboya and some people from Daboya also attacked the NDC members.

The transfer process was suspended for hours until the police were called in for the EC officials to resume the exercise.

The NPP Research Officer in Damongo, Abu Jaja Seidu, told DAILY GUIDE that the EC at a point said it had run out of materials but to the surprise of the NPP members, the commission was still registering people brought in by the NDC.

Mr. Seidu accused the EC of assisting the NDC members to register the people they brought and yet claimed that it had run out of materials.

He indicated that the police in the area escorted the Daboya youth out of Damongo back to their community.

The police confirmed the incident but said that calm had been restored.

This paper tried to contact the NDC executives and the EC on phone for their comments on the matter, but was not successful.
