We Are Determined And Ready To Take Over Govt - Ex-Prez Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has declared that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was determined and ready to take over the reins of government of Ghana and steer it once more to the heights of development and prosperity as they once did.

“Indeed our mission this time will be to accelerate the nation’s development into the mainstream of developed countries of the world on sustainable basis,” the former President said at the manifesto launch of the party in Accra today.

He said the launch of the NPP manifesto re-affirms the historic mission, vision and commitment to uphold the rule of law, human rights and economic prosperity and social advancement for all Ghanaians through accountable and efficient governance. Accepting to chair the manifesto launch at the Trade Fair Centre, Mr Kufuor said: “It is always a great joy to me when party members meet in such great numbers to show support for, and re-enforce our belief in our central course and goals of seeking power not for the sake of it but rather for the good and inclusive governance of our dear nation Ghana”.

The history of our tradition dating back to 1947, the dawn of party politics in our country makes this claim unassailable, he said.

He added that such meetings therefore reinvigorates the spirits and send a clear message to all and sundry that, “we are determined and ready to take over the reins of government of Ghana and steer it once more to the heights of development and prosperity as we once did.”

He explained that achieving prosperity for Ghana will be delivered through the faithful pursuit of the programmes and projects contained in the NPP manifesto, “when by the grace of God we assume power in January 2017.”

“Of late a lot of fetish has been made about the writing of manifesto and some have even made it seem the mere launch of a manifesto will automatically lead to victory at the polls or conjure development of the country.”

He said while it was agreeable that manifestos were an important part in competitive multi-party politics, as they lay out the various trajectories that the different parties could pursue in office and therefore could not be reduced to just a collective of promises and scholarly work to impress.”

Mr Kufuor said the features of the NPP manifesto focuses and revolves around upholding and advancing the dignity of humanity especially of all the citizens of the nation which has always been the call of the NPP tradition.

“Nowhere has poverty been eliminated by impoverishing the people. We can only fight poverty by creating wealth and we should not therefore as a people shy away from wealth creation.”

He said that was the way that the countries that the whole world acknowledges as developed has made it, and sure the way Ghana can also make it.

He said as a party they have shown their abiding appreciation of and commitment to the pragmatism anytime they have had the opportunity to be power and would therefore create wealth through sincere partnership with the private sector.
