Maidens Set Up North Korea Clash

Ghana's Under-17 female football team, Black Maidens, last Saturday beat Paraguay 1-0 to qualify for the quarter-finals of the ongoing FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup (WWC) in Amman, Jordan.

The Maidens are the only African side to have advanced beyond the group stages as Cameroun and Nigeria failed to make it.

A 68th minute powerful drive by captain Sandra Owusu-Ansah was all the Maidens needed to pick the second place ticket from Group D to the quarter-finals ahead of USA who were beaten 2-3 by group winners, Japan.

Having qualified, the Maidens will now play former champions, North Korea in the quarter-finals on Thursday, after the Asians had beaten Nigeria 3-0 in their final group C game to overtake England at the top.

Cameroun, who showed promise in their opening game, were unable to make it through the group stage, exiting without a point from their Group B.
