Mining to Enhance Contribution To National Dev't - Aryee

Miss Joyce Aryee, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, has re-affirmed the determination of the mining sector to ensure best practices to enhance its contribution to the growth of the national economy. She said mining currently accounted for over five per cent of Ghana's Gross Domestic Product and that the Chamber would mobilize resources and deliver good services to meet the expectations of government and the people. Miss Aryee was speaking when she paid a courtesy call on the Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Ms Animah Wilson at the weekend. The CEO said over the years the Chamber has pursued proactive relationships with its major stakeholders to improve the mining sector. Miss Aryee said the meeting was one of such interactions which could help the Chamber to solve problems in the sector. She expressed concern about the absence of spatial planning policies for mining areas which was making it difficult for the mining industry to act as a catalyst in the development of mining communities. Miss Aryee said "For us, corporate responsibility is not an option but a necessity that enables companies to plough back some of their earnings to raise the quality of life of their communities." She called Town and Country Planning Department to develop strategic spatial plans for the development of the mining areas to attract other industries to invest those communities.
