ECs Laziness Caused Aspirants Disqualification David Asante

The Convener of Let My Vote Count Alliance, David Asante, says presidential aspirants who have been disqualified from contesting the December 7, polls should blame the Electoral Commission for the mishaps.

He explained that - the EC’s failure to delete from the voters register some illegal electorates caused the aspirants their presidential ambition.

To him, Electoral Commission (EC) and its Chairperson, Charlotte Osei exhibited “laziness” in their line of duty following the disqualification of 13 presidential aspirants from the race to the Flagstaff House.

Among the disqualified aspirants were Hassan Ayariga of the All People’s Congress (APC), the People’s National Convention’s (PNC) Dr. Edward Mahama, the Progressive People’s Party’s (PPP) Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, and 10 others.

The disqualification left four aspirants qualified for now including the Presidential candidates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, Nana Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Convention People’s Party’s Ivor Greenstreet, and Jacob Osei Yeboah [JOY], an independent candidate.

Following the disqualification of the candidates, arguments have been made that the EC did not comply with the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 94 because it failed to contact the candidates to inform them about the errors, and to allow them time to make the necessary changes on their forms.

Speaking on NEAT FM’s morning show dubbed ‘Ghana Montie’, Mr Asante urged the disqualifiers to “with immediate effect” drag the EC to court for further clarification.

“The EC has gone through some series of activities over the years to clean the voters register towards the next elections. So what happened after those exercises to deleted illegal registers from the voters register?

“Ghanaians were expecting the EC to publicly announce names deleted from the register but that did not happen. Multiple registrants among other illegal registers names were supposed to be deleted. If that was done by the EC, no political party will allow illegal voters to endorse their candidature.

“The EC rather kept the documents to herself and that has caused these aspirants. The aspirants did nothing wrong by amassing signatories from illegal voters yet they are paying the consequences of EC’s laziness” he told host Nana Yaw Kesse
