Police Cyber Crime Unit Investigates Political Parties For Breaching Data Protect Act

The Cyber Crime Unit of the Ghana Police Service is investigating complaints by the Data Protection Commission that all Ghana’s political parties have violated the Data Protection Act which is required to ensure individuals confidential information.

According to the Commission, it notified the parties which are part of over a thousand companies that are being investigated at the beginning of the year of their obligations to register under the law after it had already given them the guideline for political campaigning, but the parties are yet to register.

The Director of the Cyber Crime Unit of the Police Service, Chief Superintendent Herbert Gustav Yankson has told Joy News that all defaulting entities have been given the end of October to register or face sanction.

We have made them aware that there is a law that requires that you register as a data controller. We’ve given them a verbal warning that we’ve given them a two week grace period to register and come to us with the registration certificate. We’ve given them up to 31st of October, so from 1st November, if you have not registered we will prosecute you.”
