NHIS Boss Challenges Scheme Workers

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), Mr. Sylvester Mensah has charged operatives of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) to address restricted access and some inconsistencies in the scheme to enable subscribers to gain it maximum benefits. He called for an improvement in communication on the operations of the scheme in order to market it to attract more subscribers. This was announced in a speech read on his behalf at a two day strategic seminar last Thursday at Wa in the Upper West region. The theme, for the programme was Delivering The NHIS Promise. In attendance were District and Municipal managers and staff of the eight mutual health insurance schemes in the region. Participants took stock of their achievements and failures over the year, adopted strategies for the future and fashioned out action plans for 210-2012 for each of the mutual schemes. Mr. Mensah disclosed that, personnel of the scheme in the country would from next year sign a performance contract with the NHIA and be expected to deliver on the agreement. He said staff appraisal for the promotion, annual increments and other benefits would be based on meeting these targets. This move according to him was part of efforts by the Authority to ensure efficiency and effective service delivery at all operational levels of the scheme. The Upper West Regional Minister, Mahmud Khalid called on participants to come out with strategies to strengthen public education to encourage more people to register. He urged operatives of the scheme to focus on how managers and service providers could collaborate such that processing of claims could be computerized and made easy. Mr. Khalid called on participants to fashion out checks and balances to ensure that referrals did not perpetuate internally generated funds to the detriment of the scheme.
