Inspector General of Police (IGP) John Kudalor has performed the ceremony to inaugurate a 200-bed capacity hostel built in Oforikrom, Kumasi.
The facility would provide decent accommodation for personnel of the service deployed for operation duties and was undertaken through public-private partnership (PPP) arrangement.
The IGP described the project as “clear demonstration of what police-civilian partnership can offer within the context of public safety and security for the benefit of our communities”.
He used the occasion to urge the officers and men to go the extra mile to earn the support and cooperation of the general public.
They should not be complacent but remain vigilant and work hard to sustain the momentum of the crime fight.
“Your extra efforts will justify the confidence reposed in the police by our beneficiaries”, he added.
Mr. Kudalor reminded everybody that effective law enforcement was a shared responsibility between the police and the community.
He indicated that their mandate could hardly be achieved without strong public support and collaboration.
He applauded the Ashanti Regional Commander, Mr. Kofi Boakye, for taking the initiative to provide the critical infrastructure through the PPP.
Shortly after his assumption of the command, he identified all police lands in prime locations within the Kumasi metropolis, which had been encroached upon and with the support of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and the metropolitan assembly, took back those lands, walled to secure them.
Commissioner of Police (COP) Boakye announced that violent crimes including robbery were on sharp decline in the region and pledged to continue to work with zeal to make the society safe for everybody.
He called for the officers to remain politically neutral and to discharge their duties with professionalism.
They should be firm, fair and even-handed in the enforcement of the law.
Mr. John Alexander Ackon, the Regional Minister, urged the people to be bold to flag up criminals in their communities to the police.
Nana Adu Mensah Asare, the Amakomhene, asked the police to do everything to live up to expectation as the nation readied to go to the polls.
