Police Nab 4 For Stealing, Buying Stolen Items

Three suspected robbers who allegedly attacked a family at gunpoint at Kwabenya in Accra and made away with money, mobile phones and laptops have been arrested in a swoop by the police.

The suspects are Abdul Rashid, alias Game Boy or Vim   a 24-year-old driver; Kwame Konadu, 21, a trader; and Benjamin Aidoo, alias Ice Tee, a 39-year-old trader.

They were arrested together with their accomplice, Kwame Tawiah, a 53-year-old goldsmith who is said to have been buying stolen wedding rings from the suspects.

Items stolen

Briefing journalists yesterday, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)   Timothy Yoosa Bonga, said at about 1:30 a.m. on November 1, 2016, three men armed with pistols and knives broke into a house at Kwabenya and attacked the occupants who were sleeping then.

He said the armed men took away a wedding ring, assorted mobile phones, tablets, laptops and an unspecified amount of money in both local and foreign currency.

The incident was reported to the Kwabenya Police and on November 2, the police, acting on a tip-off, arrested a suspected member of the gang at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra who had gone to sell the booty from the robbery.

Arrest

Although the suspect managed to escape arrest, another member of the gang, who was later identified as Aidoo, was arrested in a swoop on November 3, 2016, through police intelligence.

The police retrieved one of the laptops, three Ipads and seven mobile phones.

Aidoo is said to have led the police to arrest Rashid and Konadu, whom he mentioned as his accomplices from their hideouts, and one of the mobile phones was found on Rashid.

They are said to have led the police to the shop of a goldsmith where they usually traded wedding rings from their robbery operations.

Mr Bonga said Tawiah admitted in his caution statement to the police that he had bought the gold wedding ring from the suspected robbers and indicated that he had melted and reused it for another customer.
