NDC Promises Scholarship To Fishermens Kids

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Administration after failing to honor its promise of instituting an insurance package for fishermen in the country has once again promised to give scholarship to about one million children of fishermen in the country soon.

The Minister of Fisheries, Madam Sherry Ayittey made the promise when she presented about 700 pans, nets and other fishing items to fishermen and fishmongers at a separate ceremony at Ankaful, Saltpond and Biriwa in the Central Region on Tuesday. About 250 fishmongers benefited from the package.

According to the minister, the policy which is receiving expert advice would also provide free school uniforms to all basic school wards of fisher folks as well as monthly allowances to support such students and their parents.

Madam Ayittey stated that the scholarship package would be similar to that of the Cocoa Board Scholarship Scheme which is helping the wards of cocoa farmers in the country.

She hinted that the distribution of pans and other fishing items forms part of the government’s social responsibility towards fishermen and fishmongers in the country, adding they have contributed immensely towards the development of the country.

The Minister of Gender and Social Protection, Nana Oye Lithur called on the fisher folks to vote for President John Dramani Mahama in the upcoming election since he has done a lot for the people in the region.

She urged them to embark on door to door campaign in order to retain President  Mahama in power to enable him continue his good works for the people of Ghana.
