Government should be objective in solving Northern conflicts

Miss Agnes Gandaa, a partnership co-ordinator of the Tamale Ecclesiastical Province Pastoral Conference, has called on the government to be firm and objective in restoring peace to Northern Ghana. "Conflict issues in Northern Ghana is not only about chieftaincy and ethnicity but about governance and dirty politics and unless government makes a proactive difference, there would not be any difference between this government and the pass ones, who had tried unsuccessfully to bring peace," she stressed. Miss Gandaa made these remarks at the weekend during the opening of a two-day workshop for women in peace building at the Tolon/Kumbungu District of the Northern Region. It was on the theme: "Conflict prevention, resolution and transformation: the role of Northern women." The workshop intends among other things to enhance a better understanding of women in conflict issues. Miss Gandaa observed that to maintain and sustain peace in Northern Ghana, "political parties will have to stop politics of revenge and retaliation and embrace politics of justice and the common good". The District Chief Executive, Mr. Iddi-Manzah Mahama urged parents and guardians to take advantage of government programmes intended to give quality education to their wards that would let them stay in the area and contribute to the development efforts. He called on residents to take advantage of the workshop to sustain the peace in the area.
