Woman remanded for alleged murder

A 45-year-old farmer, Katrine Abban, who allegedly assaulted a 71-year-old farmer resulting in her death later was on Monday remanded in prison custody at the Sekondi female prison by a magistrate's court at Cape Coast. Abban, whose plea was not taken, has been charged with murder and is to be re-arraigned on November 23. Chief Inspector Francis Ockom told the court that on August 18 the accused saw the deceased planting plantain suckers at the back of her (deceased's) house. He alleged that the accused ordered her to stop planting because that portion of land belonged to her. The accused pushed her and she fell down when she failed to oblige. The prosecutor alleged that the accused then subjected her to severe beatings and bit her on the right thumb and left shoulder. The deceased lodged a complaint at the Jukwa Police Station where a medical report form was issued to her to attend the Jukwa Health Center for treatment. He said the accused was arrested on August 24, cautioned and granted a police enquiry bail for assault but was re-arrested about two weeks ago for murder when the deceased who was then receiving further treatment at the Central Regional Hospital at Cape Coast died on September 7.
