Ghana-South Africa: Black Queens Go Searching For Bronze

Coach Yusif Basigi's side are eyeing a win in the third place playoff match at the 2016 women's Afcon for a consolation

There will be a lot to play for when Ghana face South Africa in the third place playoff of the 2016 Women's Africa Cup of Nations on Friday.

Both teams had their hopes of playing in Saturday's final dashed by slim losses, and as it stands, winning bronze remains their only chance of returning home with a medal.

In front of about 40,000 fans at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde, Ghana fell 1-0 to hosts Cameroon in their semi-final clash on Thursday, spoiling their dream of playing in a fourth African Women Nations Cup final.

The lone goal, resulting from a goalkeeper Nana Ama Asantewaa fumble, was disheartening to see, but there was absolutely no shame at all in losing to the resolute Indomitable Lionesses.

Coach Yusif Basigi's outfit began the tournament with a 3-1 win over Kenya, before a 1-1 deadlock with Nigeria.

The Queens then confirmed their place in the last four following a 3-1 triumph over Mali.

"Cameroon played better and deserved the victory," Basigi said after the semi-final defeat.

"What we have seen testifies to the fact that women's football is gaining ground."

South Africa, on the other hand, opened their campaign with a goalless stalemate with Zimbabwe, before a 1-0 reversal to Cameroon.

Coach Desiree Ellis' ladies, however, recorded a 5-0 triumph over Egypt to set up a last four date with Nigeria, a match they lost by a goal to nil.

"I think South Africans can be proud of Banyana Baynana," Ellis said.

"We came and we fought hard."

Ghana, who will host the next women's Afcon in 2018, played out a 1-1 draw with South Africa in their last meeting at the tournament in 2014.
