Enrolment Must Correspond With Improved Infrastructure

Mr. Joseph K. Onyinah, Ashanti Regional Director of Education, has stressed the need to ensure that increased school enrolment correspond with improved infrastructure and adequate numbers of trained teachers. This, he said, is the way forward to be assured of effective teaching and learning. He said it was for this reason that the Government as part of the Educational Reforms committed itself to the goal of making sure that pre-school, primary and second cycle institutions were all staffed with professionally trained teachers by the year 2015. Mr. Onyinah was addressing the Third Graduation Ceremony of the Mampong Technical College of Education (Mamtech). "Quality Teachers for Quality education", was the theme. The Regional Director reminded teachers of the need to apply the professional skills acquired, to create the right environment that makes teaching and learning more exciting. He said he was happy that in-spite of deprivations and difficulties under which teachers work, there were still many of them doing a good job and producing tremendous results. He encouraged teachers to continue to exhibit a high sense of professionalism to raise the quality of education. Madam Margaret Opoku, Principal, said the school admitted 222 out of the 640 applicants this year, due to inadequate infrastructure. The college since its establishment in the year 1922 has not seen any expansion, she said. She called Government to provide the schools with an administration block and staff bungalows. Madam Opoku advised the fresh students to take their studies seriously, and refrain from anti-social behaviours and examination mal-practices.
