A Timber monitoring task force made up of the military, police and officials of the Forestry Commission on Tuesday arrested two chainsaw operators for illegally operating in a forest reserve for the past six months.
The task force was able to impound 1,500 pieces of various species of lumber from the chainsaw operators. The operators, Alex Konadu Fatigo and Ankamah Martey have been sent to Koforidua for prosecution.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, Mr Bernard Wiredu, Mpraeso District Forestry Manager, said following a tip-off, members of the task force entered the southern scarp forest reserve near Mpraeso where the two chainsaw operators were caught sawing lumber. He said the culprits claimed that they were engaged by one Charles from Kwabeng to engage in the act. According to Mr Wiredu, the said Charles managed to escape while the sawn lumber was convened to Nkawkaw for sale.
