We Are Still Investigating Why NDC Lost In Western Region

Western Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Michael Aidoo, says the umbrella family is yet to discover the possible cause of their overwhelming defeat in the December 7 general elections.

Aidoo, a big player in the construction industry, says despite the hard work the party’s campaign machinery did with the hope of winning the region for the akatamansonians, none of their set targets was achieved.

“As at now, we don’t know why we failed to achieve our set targets because we really worked hard believing that we could improve upon the results we attained in the previous election. But man proposes and God disposes,” the soft spoken contractor, known by many as ‘Big Aidoo’ told Accra-based Neat FM in an interview.

His outfit, he noted, is still investigating the possible cause of their defeat in the region.

“It is too early to know why we lost in the region. We are still investigating. We were looking forward to win more parliamentary seats but that didn’t happen. For the presidency too, we wanted to get more votes than what we amassed in 2012 but that did not happen either. So, we are still searching for answers,” he added.

In the 2012 general elections, the NDC represented by President John Dramani Mahama in the presidential poll secured 582,193 votes, representing 54.42% while Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP amassed 468,517 votes, representing 43.80% as far as the Western Region votes are concerned.

But in the 2016 elections, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the NPP polled 530,146 votes, representing 52.37% while the incumbent, President John Mahama secured 459,446, representing 45.38%.

In the parliamentary elections (2012), the NDC secured 18 out of the 26 seats in the region while the NPP won only 8 seats. However, in the 2016 parliamentary polls, the NPP was able to put up a spirited contest to win 16 out of the 26 parliamentary seats while the NDC won only 10. Political connoisseurs have attributed the NPP’s victory to due diligence on the part of the party’s hierarchy while blaming government appointees in the NDC for their show of opulence and lack of respect to Ghanaians.

But Big Aidoo disagrees. Although he did not give any reason(s) to buttress his claim, he urged the party followers to remain calm as they continue with their search for the possible cause of their defeat.
