Stop Staying Longer On Cell Phones

Prof. (Mrs) Esi Awuah of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) said talking on the cell phone for long periods could lead to hearing impairment, brain cancer and in some cases, madness. She therefore advised that cell phone use should be restricted to emergency situations. Prof. Esi-Awuah, the Dean of the Faculty of Civil and Geometric Engineering, was speaking on Promoting Quality Science and Technology Education for Sustainable National Development at a seven-day Ashanti Regional Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) clinic in Kumasi. She said it was not safe for people to talk on mobile phones for long periods. Mr Joseph Kwabena Onyinah, the Regional Education Director, reminded the youth that knowledge acquisition in science and technology was mandatory in todays fast changing world and globalization. He said he was not happy with the gender stereotyping of science, technology and mathematics and that the misconception that women could not perform in science should be a source of concern to all. Mr Onyinah said it was good the government was placing high premium on the development of science and technology. The adoption of science and technology as the basis for achieving sustainable development must be accorded paramount importance if the country is to significantly transform the living standard of the people and to maintain a balanced economy, he said.
