Members of Parliament have emphasized the need to intensify measures to fight poverty in the country. According to the MPs, poverty should be tackled with urgency and devoid of partisanship.
The MPs were contributing to a statement made on the floor of Parliament by the MP for Anlo, Hon Kofi Humado, on International Day Against Poverty which was marked on 17th October 2009.
Making the statement, the MP for Anlo, Hon. Clement Humado said policies on Agriculture should be geared towards ensuring food sufficiency in the country.
The MP for Asawase, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed, expressed concern about the fact that many children are unable to further their education due to poverty.
Hon. Dan Botwe, MP for Okere urged government to ensure guaranteed prices for some food crops like maize to help raise the income of farmers during bumper harvest.
The Majority Leader, Hon. Alban Bagbin said reliance on donor support cannot help the country to fight poverty. He advocated local initiatives to fight poverty.
The Minority Leader and MP for Suame, Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu urged government to appoint experts from various political backgrounds to constitute the National Development Planning Commission to help tap the knowledge of such people for poverty reduction.
