ASP Felix Toya: "Amend Road Traffic Act 2004"

The Odorkor MTTU Divisional Police Commander, ASP Felix Toya, is appealing to Parliament to amend the Road Traffic Act that allows victims of motor accidents to report to the Police within 24 hours. In an interaction with Peace FMs reporter, Kwame Frimpong today, the police Commander said the 24 hour time frame is too wide as it affords some victims the opportunity to rectify some mistakes before reporting to the police. According to him, some vehicular faults which lead to accidents like brake failures, light and tyre problems, are quickly repaired by these drivers before alerting the police of the accident. He said some commercial drivers, especially those involved in road accidents by virtue of being under the influence of alcohol, even ensure they are sober before calling on the police. ASP Toya said all these acts negatively affect the investigative roles played by the MTTU police resulting in the poor performance of the police in safeguarding road safety in the country. I feel this law should be amended by Parliament since a drunken driver can cover up before reporting or alter the mechanism of the vehicle before informing the police, ASP Alex Toya said. The Odorkor MTTU Divisional Police Commander also cautioned drivers to desist from using expired driving license, since insurance companies would not pay them their compensations in the event of an accident. Driving with an expired license contradicts the laws of the insurance companies, he explained.
