Minister of Roads and Transport, Hon Joe Gidisu, says his experience today in a rickety trotro has re-inforced and rekindled his commitment to speed up the urban transport centre project which will be run as a pilot scheme, from Kasoa through Mallam to Kaneshie and Accra. Speaking to PEACEFM News@6 this evening, after a tiring day hassling with commuters to get a seat on a public transport, the minister admitted the expedition was an �eye-opening opportunity.� �I think it is just an opportunity that some of us drive around in these luxury cars, if you look back we all come from such a background so it is just like revisiting the situation that the larger number of our compatriots are facing daily, commuting to and from work in those types of vehicles,� he said. Politicians, including ministers of State, parked their private vehicles today, Wednesday, 28th October, and used commercial vehicles in commemoration of the first ever public transport day celebration in Ghana. The exercise, enabled them know at first hand problems associated with the use of public transport as well as inform their decisions with regards to policy making in the transportation sector. This was in commemoration of the World Transport Day. The minister, who boarded the trotro from the Zongo Junction at Madina, disclosed how the �trotro� driver in his bid to get to his destination quickly, meandered his way through traffic by using unmotorable roads and sometimes even driving on the shoulders of the road. ��.it brought forth the need to improve upon some of our bad roads�some of these vehicles could use these link roads which needs to be improved so that it could ease traffic on our main roads,� he told peace fm. Hon Gidisu revealed that early next year, the ministry would embark on a pilot project to create special bus lanes for high occupancy vehicles to reduce congestion on the roads. �By this project we�re going to create bus lanes, which will allow high capacity vehicles unlike the present one� it will stretch it from Kasoa through Mallam to Accra,� he disclosed.
