Move To Create New Region in Offing

The Vice-President, Mr John Mahama, yesterday announced that the government was to set up a committee to plot out the technical details for the creation of another region out of the current Northern Region. Receiving a delegation of the Northern Regional House of chiefs at the Castle, Osu, Mr Mahama said the committee was to iron out the grey areas in the recommendations earlier presented by the house for the creation of a new region out of the existing Northern Region. The chiefs were at the Castle to present a resolution on the creation of the new region. Over the past decade, there have been calls for the creation of a new region out of the vast stretch of the Northern Region which extends from the countrys border with Togo in the east to that with Cote dIvoire in the west. It is the view of the chiefs and the people of the region, as well as other concerned with matters of governance, that splitting the region into two will make for more effective administration and development. Receiving the delegation, the Vice-President said after the government had been inaugurated in January 2009, its attention was drawn to a petition by the President of the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, Yagbon-Wura Bawa Doshie Adudu I, for the creation of a new region out of the present Northern Region. He said after consultations, President John Evans Atta Mills had referred the matter to the house for their consultations for the members to build consensus on the grey areas in their request for the creation of another region. I am very happy that you are able to deliberate on the matter and have passed a resolution on it, Mr Mahama said. I have taken note of your proposal for us to set up a technical committee to iron out the grey areas. This we will do, he stressed.
