It was all tears and sorrow at Otebu near Ablekuma, a suburb of Accra on Tuesday night when two little boys who were sleeping in a kiosk were burnt beyond recognition. The charred and badly disfigures bodies of the kids, Isaac Tetteh, 6, were scattered all over the accident scene at the time of Daily Guide�s visit.
Information gathered revealed that the children had been living with their mother, Veronica Coffie, in the kiosk for the past three months. On the night of the deadly inferno, Madam Coffie, an unemployed single-mother, put her children to sleep after they had taken their bath, before rushing to the Ablekuma junction to buy some food for her seven moth old baby only to come and meet her other kids in blazing fire.
In an interview with the Daily Guide newspaper, the mother of the kids indicated that she needed to buy food for her lactating baby after putting the older children to sleep. �When I was leaving to buy the food, I only lighted a hurricane lamp popularly called �bobo� in the rook and left�, Madam Coffie indicated. According to her, it was when she got to Ablekuma junction that she heard people screaming �fire fire!!� and she rushed to the scene only to realize that the fire had consumed her children. �My husband left me months ago, and since I had no money to rent a room, I moved into this kiosk which had been given to me by a friend�, she added.
A neigbour, Thompson Awutey, who witnessed the incident said the fire started around 6:30pim and exploded suddenly. He therefore rushed to the area to try and save the children. �I managed to pull the older child out of the fire as he was already dead but unfortunately, I did not know that the younger one was also in the burning kiosk�, Awutey told Daily Guide. According to him, it was not until personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service had gone to put out the fire that the other body which was terribly burnt was retrieved. The bodies of the kids have been deposited at the Police hospital morgue whilst investigations continue.
