The Adenta District Police Command has arrested 14 heavily armed land guards around the Adenta SSNIT Flat in the Greater Accra Region.
The District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, who made this known on Wednesday gave the names of those arrested as Ibrahim Adotey, 38, Boye Issah, 30, Kwei Adams, 20, Jerry Gyan, 28, Armah Kennedy, 29, Nana Ninson, 26, and Tetteh Otwemah , 21.
The rest are Zakari Iddrisu, 24, Aminu Quarshie, 20, Adamu Ali, 20, Joseph Mensah, 27, Zuburu Ishmal, 23, Ebenezer Doku, 69, and Alfred Nii Quartey-Papafio 53.
ASP Kofi Ahiatafu told the Ghana News Agency that he had information that some land guards were terrorising land owners in Frafraha, a suburb of Accra, but when the patrol team went there they escaped.
He said on Tuesday morning he received another call that the land guards had appeared again at Frafraha and beaten up workers who were developing a plot and broke a fence wall.
They were, however, apprehended around the Adenta SSNIT Flat 79, when they were escaping in two vehicles, a Toyota Tacoma pickup with registration number GT 9800-09 and a BMW 316 Series with registration number GW 222-09.
He said the two vehicles were impounded and the guards sent to the Adenta Police Station for investigation.
ASP Ahiatafu said when the two vehicles were searched by Police, they retrieved four pump action guns that were fully loaded with cartridges, seven machetes, 43 live cartridges, six used empty cartridges, a jack-knife and land documents.
He said when he assumed duty at Adenta he noticed that land guards were threatening the lives of genuine land owners and therefore created a task force to solely to handle the issue.
The owner of the destroyed fence, Alhaji Surakatu Orma Ali, said he purchased the land from the late chief of Frafraha and had a land title certificate.
He added that he was developing the plot when someone came and claimed that the area belonged to him.
The case was sent to court which ruled in his favour, so he continued developing the plot when the land guards came in to pull down the fence wall injuring four of his workers.
