Fake Policeman in police custody

The Adenta District Police Command has in its custody a 32-year-old man, Gilbert Okri Asare Asare, who posed as a police inspector and extorted money from a phone technician in Adenta. In an interview with Ghana News Agency on Wednesday, the Adenta District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stephen Kofi Ahiatafu, said the man introduced himself as phone technician and a police Inspector from the Police Headquarters. He said Asare told the complainant that he was investigating a case of cyber fraud against him and therefore demanded GH50.00. The complainant gave the money to him and he left. A few days later, Asare returned to the phone technician and told him that his boss at the Police Headquarters wanted the case to be pursued and therefore was demanding GH500.00 to drop the case. The complainant, knowing that he had not committed such offence, delayed the payment of the bribe and informed his uncle who is a policeman. His uncle advised him to report to the Adenta Police which he did. The culprit, who was given a new date for the payment, arrived to collect the GH500.00 which was later reduced to GH400.00 after bargaining. When it was time to pay the money, the Adenta Police sent in some police detectives who quickly apprehended him. According to ASP Ahiatafu, during investigations, it was revealed that the culprit, who was in the Police Service, was discharged in 2006.
