Dr Opuni Should Have Foreseen His Dismissal - Lawyer

Legal Practitioner, Lawyer Yaw Oppong says President Akufo-Addo did no wrong directing the Chief Executive of Cocobod, Dr. Stephen Opuni to vacate his position as the new act drafted in 2012 permits him as a new President to do so.

According to the counsel, a change in government makes it normal for President Nana Akufo-Addo to remove the Cocobod boss from his office as enshrined in section 14(1) of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).

Speaking on Okay FM’s Ade Akye Abia Morning Show, lawyer Yaw Oppong said “Dr. Opuni should have seen this coming when Akufo-Addo was sworn into office because his position is captured in the Act as one of the places which the new government can change.”

The Chief Executive of the Cocobod, Dr. Stephen Opuni was directed to vacate his post not later than 5:00pm Friday, January 13, 2017.

The directive was contained in a letter dated January 12, 2017 and signed by the Executive Secretary to the President, Nana Asante Bediatuo pursuant to section 14(1) of the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).

Lawyer Yaw Oppong insisted the Act is established to pave way for the new government to work with people who share his vision and supported his cause; thus it becomes logical for the new government to change the heads of certain offices.

“Chief Directors know that when there is change of government they go with the outgoing government and so all the appointees such as Cocobod are aware of this directive,” he emphasized.
