ECOWAS troops have entered The Gambia without any resistance as the sub-Saharan regional body attempts to force President Yahya Jammeh out of office.
Mr Jammeh lost the country’s 1 December 2016 election to Adama Barrow.
The dictator first conceded defeat by later rescinded his decision claiming there were irregularities that marred the polls.
The President-elect is expected to be sworn into office today, Thursday 19 January but Mr Jammeh’s refusal to leave office has forced ECOWAS to send a combat team to the tiny country to enforce the will of the people of The Gambia.
The troops, 205 of them from Ghana, entered The Gambia at Midnight following failed talks between Mauritania President Mohamed Abdel Aziz and Mr Jammeh.
Meanwhile, the capital Banjul has largely been deserted by Gambians, most of whom are fleeing to neighbouring Senegal for fear of their lives.
