Consumers and buyers are always on the receiving end of paying huge prices for goods if the manufacturer intends to cover up for loss.

The absence of a mechanized system to tax importers has led to the uncomprehensible price placed on locally manufactured goods.

Tsotsoo Okine, CEO of Ankbo Beads was blunt about making up for her losses at the expense of her buyers. According to her, the tax system in the Ghana has not been favourable to manufacturers who depend on the importation of certain materials for the manufacturing of their goods.

In an interview on ATV’s Sika Sem show, she noted that she is sometimes at a loss when authorities at the Post Office charge her higher fees on goods she has bought for cheaper on the internet.

“Sometimes I buy goods for cheap online and it could even be shipped for free but when it gets to Ghana, I am made to pay huge sums of money to clear my goods”, she lamented on the show.

She further explained that the sad occurrence is as a result of the inadequate systems to check and charge importers rightly for the goods they have purchased.

CEO of Bello Couture Gh, Benette Kwame also shared his view on the subject and noted that if an importer dare challenges an officer over the right moneys to pay to claim his or her goods at the port, the situation could be blown out of proportion.

“If you argue with them, they can intentionally worsen your case and threaten to seize the goods you have imported. You then have to plead and agree to their terms else you are doomed”, he said.
