Angry Volta Residents Beat And Disarm Policemen For Protecting Nomadic Herdsmen

Some angry locals of Sokode-Ando in the Ho municipality of the Volta region yesterday laid ambushed on a team police men who went to the area to quell tension between them and some nomadic herdsmen, who they accused of murdering a man on his farm last week.

According to Starr news sources, the locals who reported the case to the police on Monday, later decided to flush out the herdsmen from the area yesterday after they discovered another dead body in the area.

However, the intervention by a team of police men to evacuate the nomads from the area to avert any clashes, infuriated the local vigilante group which laid ambushed on the law enforcers and beat them to pulp, with two of sustaining severe injuries.

The locals also seized three rifles from the police in the scuffle, as they reportedly also vandalized a police vehicle in the melee. The agitated locals also mounted road blocks on a section of the Ho-Accra road which passes through the area, to prevent any herdsman from leaving the area.

It however took the intervention of a police reinforcement team from the regional command to clear the road from free flow of traffic and maintain some sanity in the area. A mediation team comprising of the assembly member for the area and some opinion leaders have since been negotiating with the locals to ceasefire and also hand over the seized riffles to the police.

One of the riffles, Starr news understands has been released to the police last night, whiles injured officers are responding to treatment at the regional hospital in Ho.
