MP Constituency Development Fund To Be Established

A Bill that will require that members of Parliament access their constituency development fund through the consolidated fund is being prepared for Cabinet by the Ministry of Local Government and rural Development. The bill, when passed, will ensure that MPs would no long access their constituency development fund from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) but would rather access their development fund from the Consolidated Fund. The sector minister, Joseph Yileh Chireh, disclosed this in an interview with BusinessWeek saying that government has taken into account the challenges that MPs have been facing in accessing their share of the DACF. He observed that over the years there has been a lack of cooperation between some District Chief Executives (DCEs) and Members of Parliament (MPs) over the release and application of the MPs Common Fund and this continues to pose enormous challenges to the countrys democratic dispensation. Another issue of a major concern was deductions made at source from the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF), which is also affecting the operations of most of the assemblies, as they are sometimes left with very little to carry out their developmental agenda.
