A $15 million oil storage facility with the capacity of about 13.5 million litres has been constructed at the Takoradi Port as part of the ongoing Takoradi Port expansion project to help facilitate the provision of fuel to vessels.
Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, who recently paid a working visit to the Port and the other institutions under his Ministry in the Western Region, expressed satisfaction with the work done so far.
The construction of a new oil and gas terminal at the Takoradi Port is also progressing steadily.
Presently, the Takoradi Port does about 30 percent imports and 70 percent exports of cargoes that are considered to be of less value.
The Ghana Ports and Harbours’ Authority (GPHA) took advantage of the discovery of oil and gas in large quantities in 2007 to get the once vibrant port back to its glory and make it the services hub for the black gold industry.
Ghana Oil Company (GOIL), Viking and Haliburton have already constructed facilities to provide oil and gas services at the port.
At the Drivers’ and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mohammed Twumasi, acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), assured the public of the authority’s commitment to providing improved customer service, adding that the Western Regional Office of the DVLA was currently undergoing structural engineering.
Alhaji Twumasi said the DVLA had conducted a thorough examination into its operations, adding “we have identified the challenges that impede our service delivery, and as an authority, our hands are on deck to fix all challenges.”
Emmanuel Narh, Regional Head of the DVLA, said the reconstruction of the ground floor facility into a two-storey office complex was about 40 percent complete.
Mr. Narh said the staff strength of the regional office had also increased to 22 to maximize operational efficiency.
He requested from the ministry new vehicular inspection equipment such as modern brake testers, exhaust gas analysers, beam alignment machines and headlamp testers to help in the efficient discharge of their duties.
Kweku Ofori Asiamah, after touring the site, urged the contractor to complete the project on time.
He said the ministry would work hard to make Ghana the transportation hub of West Africa.
