Authorities of Asesewa Senior High School have been compelled to convert the school library into an office facility following failure by Architecture and Engineering Services Limited (AESL), the state’s engineering and architectural consulting agency, to correct a defect-ridden 12-unit classroom block.
The 12-unit classroom block commissioned in 2012 had its beams falling with deep cracks in the walls as a result of poor engineering works by the contractor, compelling AESL, which supervised the project, to close down the entire block in 2016 to avoid disaster.
This has displaced more than 200 students in the school. Teachers and office staff have also been affected.
The situation has created intensive accommodation stress compelling school authorities to pack students in classrooms and convert the only library into an office. As a result, the students are unable to access library services to aid learning.
The admission of fresh students for 2016/2017 academic year has compounded the problem and that has created severe overcrowding in classrooms.
The headmaster, Mr Samuel Yeboah Gyebi, explained to the DAILY HERITAGE that classrooms have been packed with 70 to 90 students creating a difficult situation for teachers.
He further said most elective subject classes are held under trees due to inadequate classrooms.
The headmaster said all efforts made to get AESL to compel the contractor to return to site to do overhaul correction of the building had proved futile.
He said the Kono of Manya Krobo, Nene Sackitey, worried by the development, had stepped in to push for the government to come to the aid of the school.
