Queens Lead Fight Against Illegal Abortion

Queenmothers in the Eastern Region have taken centre stage in the fight against illegal abortion to prevent maternal deaths.

The queens from across the 18 municipalities and districts in the region have been organizing durbars and meetings in the communities to educate the people, particularly teenage girls on reproductive health.

This is being done in partnership with Ipas Ghana and the Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana (PPAG).

A workshop to provide the platform to share experiences, to strengthen their counseling services had been held in Koforidua.

The queens did not provide any figures but insisted they were making good progress and that there had been significant reduction in illegal termination of pregnancies and maternal deaths in their various communities.

They applauded Ipas Ghana and PPAG for the strong support.

Mr. Selomey Kofi Azumah, Senior Advisor of Ipas Ghana, asked the queenmothers to continue to encourage pregnant women to attend antenatal clinic to avoid any complications during childbirth.

They should sustain the effort to keep abortion and maternal death on a downward trend.

Ms. Antoinette Da Rocha of PPAG applauded them for the “wonderful job” they were doing to stop women from dying through abortion
