Prez Akufo Addo Fires Up Hajj Board

The reconstituted Hajj Board has a charge to keep. That charge, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo says, is to work for a smooth pilgrimage to and from Mecca this year.

The President swearing-in an 11-member board to steer the affairs of the spiritual exercise of Ghanaian Muslims for the next four years, yesterday, tasked the Sheikh I C Quaye-led board to work to the expectation of Ghanaians.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, who was present at the ceremony, said the movement of Ghanaian pilgrims to Mecca had experienced several challenges which needed to be looked at and worked on.

He expressed confidence in the new board, with particular mention of the Chairman, Sheikh I. C. Quaye, saying, “I’m anticipating that with the caliber of people on the board and the leader of a well-known figure. A man who distinguished himself in the service of our country.”

President Nana Akufo-Addo was optimistic that the problems associated with the annual pilgrimage would be things of the past so that “we will see a smooth movement to Mecca as a regular occurrence.”

The board members were led by the President to swear the oath of allegiance to the country, after which the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, thank the President for his commitment toward a successful pilgrim.

The Chief Imam, however called on the President not to forget his promises but to try hard to keep them and honour them. He also promised there would be support from their side to ensure this government succeeds.

Also,  Sheikh Osmanu urged those who would “find themselves at Hajj to pray for the President, the Vice and the entire country. 

Members of the current National Hajj Board include: former Greater Accra Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye leading the 11-man board to oversee the organisation of the annual Hajj. 

Also appointed to head the Medical Unit of the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca is Dr Seidu Zakaria with Abdulai Rahman Alhassan Gomda heading the Communication Team while Dr Sani Abduai leads the Information Technology Unit.

Other members appointed by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to work in various capacities are: Abdul Malik Adams Gariba, Mr. Farouk Hamza, Sheikh Amin Bonsu, Alhaji Inusa Amadu and Mr. Kamal-Deen Abdulai     

Also working with the Board are: Ismaela Ibrahim, Mohammadu Osmanu Alidu, Mohammed Osumanu Yunusah, Mr. Braimah Adams and Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Mohammed.

In a related development, the Vice President, Alhaji Mammudu Bawumia toured the new Mosque at Kawukodi which is still under construction. His site visit was to get first-hand information on the progress of work, as this administration seeks to improve the standard of living of Muslims.
