Police Move To Restore Peace After Violent Clashes

A team of armed police officers has been deployed to restore calm at Mepemasem, near Hweehwee in the Kwahu East District, after violent clashes between the youth in the community and Fulani herdsmen.

This was triggered by the alleged killing of a 20-year old farmer, Emmanuel Kojo Boateng, about two weeks ago, by the herdsmen.

The irate youth, who felt they had had enough of the Fulani, decided to take them on - engage them in a gun battle.

Schools had been forced to close down and economic activities crippled because of security concerns.

Police Chief Superintendent James Sarfo-Peprah, the Nkawkaw Divisional Commander, has however, given the assurance that the “situation is under firm control”.

He told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that 30 armed personnel had been sent there to maintain law and order and asked those who sought refuge at the nearby community of Asisieso, to return.

He said the police would provide adequate security protection for everybody.

Mr. Solomon Aboagye, the assembly member for Hweehwee, complained about the destruction of their source of water by the herdsmen and their animals.

The people, now have to make a round trip of about six kilometres to draw water for cooking, drinking and other purposes.
