The Spelling Bee Champ, Afua Ansah Lights Perpetual Flame At Ghana @ 60

Ms. Afua Ansah, TSB2016 winner will join President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo today March 6 to light the perpetual flame at the Independence Square, as part of the celebrations for the 60th independence anniversary of Ghana.

In 2016, Afua Ansah won The Spelling Bee Ghana and went on to the US to make history as the first ever African finalist at the Scripps Spelling Bee, USA.

Her outstanding performance in the competition earned her a standing ovation in Washington, DC. She was also featured on many local and international media.

By dint of hardware, Afua brought international media attention on the excellence that Ghana's education offers.  Based on this feat, she was chosen to be on this honourable assignment.

Afua is a 14-year old JHS 3 student of Ridge Church School who loves public speaking and was the flag bearer for her political party in her school's mock election.

Afua is an avid reader who revels in anything from history to politics and her favourite book, We Should All Be Feminists, is by the person she would most like to meet: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

“What makes me proud as a Ghanaian is our rich cultural diversity and our spirit of togetherness,” she says.

Mrs. Eugenia Tachie-Menson, Country Director, Young Educators Foundation, organizers of The Spelling Bee says “we are extremely honoured and very excited about this national assignment for Afua; we will continue to provide the platform of our programmes to Ghanaian children  to showcase their talent.”
