Nestlé’ Milo has been the main sponsor of the Presidential Independence Day Awards for the past fourteen years and has this year recognised the academic excellence, Leadership and community development of sixty children from all the ten regions of Ghana, for excelling in their basic education.
The Award ceremony took place at The Banquet Hall, State House ahead of the 60th anniversary of Ghana’s independence, which coincides, with Nestlé Ghana also celebrating sixty years of existence as a company that has positively contributed to Ghanaian society.
In celebration of both Ghana and Nestlé Ghana’s 60 year landmarks, this year’s Awardees were increased from 20 students to 60 award winners. The awardees were treated to a four day grand reception and visit to our Nestlé Ghana factory in Tema and other monumental land marks of significance to Ghana, as part of their prize package. They were also given a Laptop, Cash prizes, a hamper of assorted Nestlé products, Crystal Plaque, Medallion, as well as some assorted books & stationeries from other co-sponsors.

Speaking at the event, the President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo emphasized the government’s commitment to providing accessible education for all, beginning at the basic and secondary education levels. He commended the initiative of company’s like Nestle in supporting education. “I wish to thank Nestlé for its fourteen year contribution to this ceremony”
In his delivery, the Minister for Education Hon. Matthew Opoku Prempeh reiterated the need for Awardees to remain committed to excellence and continue to commit to lifelong learning.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Managing Director of Nestlé, Mrs. Freda Duplan emphasized that Nestlé as a company is guided by one purpose: “enhancing the quality of life and contributing to a healthier future’. “We are guided by the values of respect for self, others, diversity and for the future. Respect for the future enables us to act responsibly and support the development of the younger generation through our support for education. We develop thriving and resilient communities and support better livlihoods for those we live and work for. We also shape sustainable consumption and steward resources for future generations.”
Past winners of these awards have progressively pursued further academic laurels and other professional accomplishments that are contributing to the development of our nation. One of the ex-award winners works with the Nestlé Generating Demand team managing the Confectionery Category, some have become Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Teachers, Bankers, just to mention a few.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) on education create the awareness on the need to ensure inclusive and quality education for all. The SDGS also promote lifelong learning, with a target to ensure that by 2030, both males and females have access to basic, secondary and appropriate tertiary education across the globe. Nestlé as a company believes that education is a joint window of opportunity to develop the right skill of manpower for current and future generations.
In 2016, Nestlé announced its long term commitment to youth and employment by committing to provide young people across the world with internship opportunities and readiness-for work skills that can position them to win in today’s business environment. In Ghana, we run graduate trainee programmes and internships that have given young people work experience and mentorship from the management of Nestlé Ghana.
