Teacher Allegedly Beats Student To Death

Members of the Yatanor Unit Committee, near Asamankese has appealed to the Police Administration to investigate circumstances leading to the death of Prince Asiedu, a 13-year-old student of Afranse Junior High School (JHS), who was allegedly beaten by his teacher resulting in his death. Mr George Kwame Oduro, spokesman of the committee, also appealed to the police to exhume the body of the deceased and to arrest the teacher, Mr Emmanuel Boakye and the Chief of Yatanor, Nana Boateng, who ordered the burial of the deceased without the knowledge of the police. Making the appeal through the Ghana News Agency, at Yatanor, Mr Oduro said that was the second time such an incident had occurred in the community. Throwing more light on the incident, he said, on October 21, it was alleged that the deceased, with others, was disturbing during the school worship period. Consequently, the Senior Prefect of the school wrote their names and submitted them to Mr Boakye, the class teacher, who later invited them and beat them severely. Mr Oduro said as a result of the beatings, Asiedu sustained some injuries and reported the case to his father who became offended and threatened to go and attack the teacher but was restrained by his friends. He said in the evening the father sent his son to the mother at Brekumaso, two kilometres away from Yatanor. Mr Oduro said later that night, while Asiedu was asleep he fell unconscious and was rushed to the Asamankese Government Hospital where he was admitted for two days. After being discharged, he again fell unconscious and was rushed to the Saint Luke Clinic at Asamankese where the mother narrated the case to the nurse in-charge who advised that the matter be reported to the Police. Mr Oduro said while receiving treatment at the clinic, Asiedu died and the case was reported to the chief. He said after a closed door meeting with the teachers, the chief ordered the burial of the deceased. The chief refused to speak to the press when contacted.
