The Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Andani at Yendi in the Northern Region has decried the water crisis in his jurisdiction and called for help.
The Yendi Municipality is currently facing acute water shortage which has halted business activities in the area and its surroundings.
The perennial water crisis which has hit the area for almost a decade now becomes acute when the area does not receive enough rains.
The situation has affected residents of Yendi; schools, Hospital and other private institutions who are working in the area.
The Dagbon Regent, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Andani, told DAILY GUIDE that they had solicited help from the Ghana Water Company and the government to no avail.
According to the regent, because of the population increase in Yendi, the source of water at Dakar is drying up and cannot sustain the people.
He indicated that people in the area have resorted to using water from unhealthy sources that could reintroduce guinea worm infestation into the area.
“Sometimes you don’t have any alternative than to rely on such water to survive which could also cause you some health challenges.”
He recommended water supply from River Oti as the interim remedy to the situation because it is the largest river around and close to the area.
The regent appealed to government to as a matter of urgency come to their aid to avert the collapse of economic activities in the area.
However, Naa Yakubu Andani lauded the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo administration for capturing Yendi in the budget statement and hope that the water problem will be fixed.
He also thanked the President for letting Ghanaians know that they have to change their attitudes adding that ‘if we want to grow as a people, then Ghanaians have to change their attitude towards everything’.
