Race For GCB MD: Unibank Deputy MD Leads

Race For GCB MD: Unibank Deputy MD Leads The Independent newspaper can state without equivocation that the Mills administration has settled on renowned banker, Mr John Kofi Mensah as the new Managing Director of Ghana Commercial Bank (GCB). Mr. Kofi Mensah is currently the Deputy Managing Director of Unibank, one of the leading private banks in the country. What is now left is for government to make the announcement and this will be done in the coming days barring any last minute hitches. The decision to confirm Mr Kofi Mensah as GCB boss was taken last Monday after series of meetings and deliberations on who will be the most suitable person to lead the state-owned bank in the face of stiff competition from private commercial banks. With the vast experience of Mr Kofi Mensah coupled with the overwhelming endorsement by the three main important government institutions the Council of State, the Ministry of Finance and the Presidency, it will be a major shocker if his (Mensah) name is clandestinely substituted as has been the case in some appointments. A source close to the Castle said Mr. Kofi Mensah is bringing a lot on board aside the vast experience he has acquired over the years. He will help consolidate and strengthen GCB, which has been described as governments biggest bank, the source added. He will also help to enhance the corporate image of the Bank by putting more emphasis on its customer relations, the source further added. Mr. Kofi Mensah will also seek to employ sound business strategies that will maximize the banks profits. The in-coming GCB MD has an MSc degree in Banking and Finance from FINAFRICA in Milan, Italy and a BA degree in Economics and Statistics from the University of Ghana. Legon. He has very extensive expertise in all areas of Banking especially Treasury Management and Foreign Operations. Before joining UniBank, he worked at International Commercial Bank as the General Manager/Deputy CEO and supervised the organic growth of the bank. He has previously worked with the erstwhile Bank for Housing and Construction as well as Securities Discount Company Limited.
