'We Care for Children' Donate 2300 Books To KEEA Municipality

'We Care For Children' a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), has donated books to the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abrem (KEEA) Municipal Education Directorate in the central region.

A total of two thousand three hundred (2300)textbooks written in Fante and English valued at a cost of Ghc16, 000.00 to the KEEA municipal education directorate.

The NGO currently have publications in Twi, Akuapem, Ewe, Fante, Ga, Dangbe, and almost through with publications in Nzema and Dagbaani, has since donated about six thousand and one hundred copies of books in various Ghanaian languages to five Districts, Municipal and Metropolitan Education Directorates; Ga Central, Ga West, Koforidua, Cape Coast metropolitan and Upper Denkyira-Twifo Praso Education Directorates.

The Director of the NGO Apostle Michael Ankrah stated that, his outfit is to enhance local language proficiency and to promote the culture and heritage of this Country, saying "our force is to help promote the teaching and learning of Ghanaian languages in schools and to produce and distribute Ghanaian language textbooks and workbooks freely to pre-school and lower primary school pupils in less privileged areas.”

The Director appealed with the GES to place premium on local languages since they plays critical role in promoting our culture. He pledged that his outfit’s commitment in working to enhance the proficiency of the local languages among Ghanaian pupils and students. He therefore called on the government support and philanthropists to support the initiative.

“We are therefore, appealing to the government, well-meaning Organizations and Individuals, as Well as other NGOs to be part of this noble effort to help our less privileged brothers and sisters,” Mr. Ankrah stated.

The deputy minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection and also the MP for Abuakwa South Hon. Gifty Twum Ampofo who also chaired the occasion was very much enthused about the initiative and called for stakeholder meetings to enhance the teaching and learning of local languages. She bemoaned the lack of interest in learning local languages nowadays.

“It is incredible how people feel inferior when they study Ghanaian languages in school. Students mostly feel shy to tell their colleagues they are studying Twi, Ewe or Akuapim but are very happy to say they are English Students.”

She however, pledged governments resolve to work to change the situation since our languages (Dialect) identify us. Adding that, “The government of H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo is very passionate about education, and we are not only going to enhance the Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education, but we are also starting the Free SHS policy this year and the government is very committed to reviving setting high the standard of the educational system in the country.

Mr.Thomas Kwofie who read on behalf of the Regional Director of Education urged the KEEA Education Directorate to take good care of the books, he expressed appreciation to the NGO effort.

The central regional deputy minister Hon. Thomas Yaw Adjei Baffoe in his address, urge the NGO to publish many of the books so, that, it can be distributed to the whole nation so that every Ghanaian child would be benefit from the book but not to select some few students.
