GWCL Workers Defend Minister ... As They unmask Charlatans Baying For CEO’s Blood

In what could be describe as a swift and timely rebuttal to a conscience-soothing falsehood, members of the Concern Workers' of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) have spiritedly denied ever raising concerns over the appointment of Dr. Clifford Braimah, as the Managing Director (MD) of the company, revealing that those attacking the minister belong to one faction that is lobbying for the Managing Director position, as well as two other deputy positions for their men.

They told this paper yesterday that, "it is never true that a group of workers met and are aggrieved over the appointment of a new acting managing director. It is also not true that whenever a managing director of a public institution is proceeding on retirement he hands over to the second in command, a substantive managing director could be appointed to take over, this is not an illegality or autocratic or disrespectful in any case."

According to the workers, those baying for the CEO’s blood were disappointed by the appointment of an outsider and have resorted to malign the sector minister for that decision.

They, however, admonished that the culture of GWCL workers always dictated to the Ministers on who should be a managing director or deputy must stop since it is not helping the company.

The Concern Workers however stressed that the Minister did not flout any laid down regulations by appointing Dr. Braimah, and that the appointment of a new MD was to forestall the jostling over the position which could have dire consequence for the company.

They also alleged that the GWCL was consumed by corruption and that those insiders who were jostling for the top position wanted to further enrich themselves since they would have the authority over procurements and other relevant businesses of the company.

The members say, they were in support of the directive by the Minister, Mr. Kofi Adda to maintain the Deputy Managing Director in Charge of Operations, Mr. Bulley to properly orient the new incoming CEO to equip arm him with knowledge in all operations of the GWCL so as to identify the cartel at management level involved in corrupt administrative practices within the procurement department of the GWCL.

They called on the minister not to accede to the demands of those disgruntled staff saying, "We must say that we are happy to have a managing director appointed not from within but from outside, who we believe can halt the rampant corruption and other evil practices at GWCL.”

The workers are however ready to accept every good decision by government to ensure the effective running of the company to help in the success rule of the Nana Akufo-Addo government since the NDC could not do better.

They are also pleading for all transfers in the area of human resources to be suspended for the minister and the MD to pick signals from existing workers in their various portfolios.

It would be recalled that just last week, sections of the media went to town over claims that some supposed workers at GWCL were not happy with the appointment of Dr. Clifford Braimah, as the acting CEO. It is this story the workers have refuted in no uncertain terms.
