Stop the Politicization of NHIS

Mr Paul Kusi, the Sunyani West District Manager of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), has warned against the politicization of the health insurance scheme, as government worked to improve its operations.

He said the scheme was a national asset and the country would lose dearly if it collapsed, hence the need to revamp it.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency, Mr Kusi said the operations of the NHIS ought to be seen like a utility service- Electricity Company of Ghana and the Ghana Water Company Limited, which provides services to all clients.
He said issues on health care were essential to the nation, and it would be suicidal if the general public continued to politicize the operations of the scheme.
Mr Kusi called on the government to pump enough resources into the scheme and advised those who have still not registered to do so.
“We the workers of the scheme become worried and feel embarrassed when we hear false statements about the scheme on political campaign platforms mounted by our politicians” he said.
Mr Kusi said although the NHIS was an ideology and initiative of one political party, it has become a national asset, and there is the need for everybody to support and ensure its growth.
He said the NHIS has gained recognition as one of the best and reliable data based system in the country.
The Scheme Manager said his outfit had intensified its membership mobilization drive as well as renewal of identification cards in local communities to relieve clients of the stress they sometimes undergo during renewals.
